How to Buy Structural Metal Deck

Structural metal deck used in commercial construction provides the strength and lateral stability required for roofs and poured concrete floors. These hot-rolled steel sheets give the structural support for virtually all types of nonresidential buildings. The lightweight, strong, economical, and easy to install features make metal deck ideal for use in the construction of low-rise, high-rise, and manufacturing sectors of the nonresidential market.

Consider these three important factors when purchasing structural metal deck.

High quality Steel

First, be sure the metal deck you purchase is made of high-quality steel. Install with confidence when using steel decking that meets the Steel Deck Institute requirements and has Underwriters Laboratory Classified Product listing for compliance with established quality standards.

Metal deck should be made from steel conforming to ASTM Designation A1008/A1008M for painted deck, or A653/A653M for galvanized deck.

Modern & Older Deck Types

Secondly, find a supplier that carries a wide variety of deck profiles, gauges, and finishes.

Deck profiles have evolved to become stronger and more economical, lighter and easier to install. For example, when engineers first developed type A roof decking, they focused on the strength of the metal deck. However, it was only a secondary factor of concern. The primary objective was to maximize the width of the top flange. This would provide the maximum amount of support for the roofing insulation installed on top of the Type A deck.

Over time, roofing materials improved and steel deck manufacturers reduced the width of the top flange. This reduction increased the efficiency of the section from Type A decking to Type F decking. And finally, from Type F deck to Type B deck.

Similarly, floor deck used with poured concrete slabs have several options. Common C deck profiles used in poured slabs have smooth ribs: 0.6 C Deck, 1.0 C Deck, and 1.5 C Deck. All have specific benefits and advantages and allow for a variety of differences in construction. All options offer flexibility in terms of featured gauges and stock lengths.

Furthermore, composite deck gives an additional benefit because of its mechanical composite relationship with the concrete. A variety of deck depths along with a variety of gauges give you options for spans and slab depths. Rolled-in mechanical embossments–or bumps–in the vertical ribs form a mechanical bond with the concrete slab to develop a composite floor system. Use this deck type as both a form during construction and as the positive reinforcing of the concrete slab.

Availability and Convenience

Thirdly, the timing of receiving the deck at the job site is critical to the success of your construction job. When the metal deck sits at the job site too long, it can be in the way, damaged, or “walk away.” Finding a supplier with the deck in stock, able to cut to specified lengths and ship the next day, provides you with the assurance that construction will continue on schedule.

Similarly, when tearing off a roof for a reroof job and discovering an old deck style that requires replacement, you need an immediate source of metal deck for same-day pick up. Your supplier should have your deck type available for your immediate use.

Just as important, purchasing deck should be fast and easy with several options for payment so you can get on with the job.
