Accuracy is important in commercial construction. This is more so in the case of installation of steel roof and floor decking. While the deck panels themselves are engineered for load-bearing performance, it’s the metal decking accessories that enable complete, code-compliant installation. Whether it is closures and pour stops, sump pans and flute fillers, every accessory needs to fit the precise profile of the deck in use-or the whole system may not perform.
At Keystar Industries, we emphasize the importance of matching all metal deck accessories to specific profiles like Type B, Type N, and form decks. This article describes why that compatibility is important, how each profile requires a different accessory configuration, and how Keystar makes sure that each component fits properly prior to its arrival at the jobsite.
The Importance of Profile Compatibility
Metal decking is produced in many different profiles, each having a different rib shape, depth and spacing. These properties are essential to the structural performance of the panel, and they also define the shape and the role of the accessories that are needed.
Uncut, unbent, and unformed accessories cannot seal, will not fit together during installation, and can negatively affect insulation, waterproofing, or fire ratings. In other instances, incompatible parts cause expensive delays as installers are forced to alter parts in the field or order replacements.
That’s why profile-specific planning for metal decking accessories is essential. The correct components save time, eliminate errors in the field, and make sure your system works as expected.
Learning the Common Deck Profiles
Keystar Industries supplies decking in a range of profiles for structural roofs and floors. The most popular are:
Type B Deck: The most common profile used on low-slope commercial roofs is a 1.5” deep wide-rib. It has outstanding strength-to-weight characteristics and is the most common type of roof deck in the U.S.
Type N Deck: A 3” deep profile that is used when longer spans are needed- normally in open steel framing applications like gymnasiums, warehouses and auditoriums.
Form Deck: Form deck is used to support concrete slab pours on floor levels, form deck does not act compositely with concrete and is best suited to short spans and flat slab designs.
F Deck and A Deck: Deeper profiles (1” or less) in older buildings or special retrofit applications where existing conditions require nonstandard depths.
All these profiles possess a different geometry of the rib that alters the way accessories need to be manufactured. None of the profiles are the same in terms of flute spacing or panel widths, so each accessory has to be customized to fit.
Types of Accessories and Profile Uses
When it comes to metal decking accessories, several components are profile-dependent. We produce and carry accessories at Keystar that are tailored to particular deck shapes and functions.
Some of the usual accessories and how they respond to certain profiles are as follows:
End Closures and Side Closures
These are made to fit the flute pattern of the deck. In Type B deck, the closure should be compatible with the 36 wide panel with its specified rib shape. In Type N deck, which has deeper ribs and wider spacing, closures are made in that manner.
Pour Stops
Pour stops are installed along the edges of concrete form deck systems and need to line up with the ribs to contain the slab and be attached to structural members. These vary frequently between form deck and composite or B deck installations.
Flute Fillers
Flute fillers are cut to fit the precise spacing of deck flutes and support equipment or insulation placed on top of the deck. The dimensions of flute between Type B and Type N deck are quite different.
Foam Closures
Although flexible, even foam closures are usually cut or molded to fit a particular flute shape. Air or water infiltration may occur when the wrong pattern is used.
Sump Pans
In case of roof drains, the sump pan should be of the same rib spacing and depth of the deck to ensure that the pan is flush and can drain properly.
Cell Closures
In cellular or deep-profile decks with built-in conduit pathways, cell closures terminate these runs at ends or intersections. These are very profile-oriented.
Bent Plates and Edge Supports
These are less dependent on flute shape, but are usually designed to suit the panel depth and to interface with the decking profile at terminations or corners.
The takeaway? Unmatched accessories will not work properly with the profile they are applied to- and may undermine structural, acoustic, or fire performance in the process.
How Keystar Guarantees Profile-Matched Supply of Accessories
At Keystar Industries, we do more than stock a wide variety of metal decking accessories—we fabricate and configure them to precisely match your deck type and your project’s specifications. We will do so by:
Profile-Integrated Manufacturing
All closures, fillers and pans are made to match with the deck profiles that Keystar stocks. Order Type B deck to roof a warehouse or form deck to a high-rise floor and your accessories will be manufactured to that specific profile.
Finish Matching
Accessories are supplied in galvanized or primed gray to match the deck panels, which will provide consistent corrosion protection and a uniform look-particularly in exposed ceiling applications.
Plan Review Services
Don t know what accessories your project requires? Keystar team is able to look at structural plans or decking layouts to determine what is required, how much and what needs to be fabricated. This assists in minimizing omissions, rework and enhancing accuracy of orders.
Bundled Delivery or Pickup
Keystar is able to ship decking and accessories together to facilitate installation, with the material arranged in an easy to unload and sequence on site. We also provide same-day pickup at our Eagan, MN warehouse on local jobs.
The Advantages of Getting Accessories Right the First Time
Correctly matched metal decking accessories eliminate guesswork during installation. When the components are cut and profiled correctly, field crews do not have to make field adjustments, order replacements, or hold up slab pours or roof work.
Other advantages are:
– Quicker installation periods
– Better code compliance and inspection results
– Less waste and rework
– Less coordination problems on the jobsite
– Reduced labor expenses because of fit-up effectiveness
These benefits are particularly useful on multi-phase commercial jobs where accessory ordering and delivery has to be coordinated with an exact construction schedule.
Begin with the Correct Supplier
It is not a luxury to match accessories to deck profiles. Poorly fitted parts cause problems that spread across the whole building process. Through our partnership with Keystar, you will have a supplier who knows the technical demands and logistical realities of constructing with steel deck systems.
Whether you’re working with Type B, Type N, or form deck profiles, Keystar Industries provides the profile-specific metal decking accessories that allow your crews to work faster, safer, and more accurately. Our deep inventory, skilled fabrication, and responsive service help construction teams in the Upper Midwest to construct structures that will continue to perform long after the project completion.
